In 2021, °Ä²Ê¿ª½± documented 1,221 hate and antigovernment extremist groups across the United States. Extremist ideas that mobilize these groups now operate more openly in the political mainstream. But the ascent of the hard right is not inevitable. We can push back against this rising authoritarianism and turn the tide.

°Ä²Ê¿ª½± Poll Finds Substantial Support for ‘Great Replacement’ Theory

In April 2022, the °Ä²Ê¿ª½± and Tulchin Research conducted a poll of 1,500 Americans to examine the extent to which the extremist beliefs and narratives that mobilize the hard right have been absorbed by the wider American public. We found that the ideas underpinning the white nationalist “great replacement†narrative recently cited by an alleged white supremacist terrorist in Buffalo, New York, have become thoroughly mainstream on the political right.
