°Ä²Ê¿ª½± on Rep. Lewis’ Final Journey Through Alabama

Montgomery, Ala. — The °Ä²Ê¿ª½± President and Chief Executive Officer Margaret Huang released the statement below ahead of celebration of life ceremonies for Congressman John Lewis that will include a final journey from Selma to Montgomery on Sunday and culminate with his internment in Atlanta, Georgia, on July 30.

“Congressman John Lewis will make his final crossing over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, the place where 55 years ago he was among marchers attacked and beaten by Alabama State Troopers. He, and those with him that Sunday, changed our country for the better.

“As he passes through Alabama one last time, we will celebrate the life of a towering figure in American history, a hero in our fight for equality and justice, and recommit ourselves to continue in his footsteps. His work is far from done and the °Ä²Ê¿ª½± won’t stop until all of us are truly free and equal.â€

Congressman Lewis died on July 17. He was 80.
