Election Day Statement from °Ä²Ê¿ª½± President and CEO Margaret Huang
Montgomery, Ala. — °Ä²Ê¿ª½± (°Ä²Ê¿ª½±) President and CEO Margaret Huang released the below statement as millions of Americans cast their votes for the next president of the United States:
“This year, a devastating public health crisis brought into stark relief our society’s chronically neglected ills, with particularly painful consequences for people of color. Hundreds of thousands have lost their lives to COVID-19, and millions of families are facing eviction and financial ruin in a country marred by vast income inequality and an inadequate social safety net.
“The grossly irresponsible handling of the pandemic is why we must elect leaders who are ready and willing to lead. Whether it’s a federal office or a local school board, those in positions of power must have the competence and compassion to confront – and overcome – our greatest challenges.
“This election year the °Ä²Ê¿ª½± has worked tirelessly not only to ensure equitable access to the ballot box but also to protect voters amid the pandemic, help nonpartisan, nonprofit voter outreach organizations increase registration, and increase participation among people of color.
“The health of our democracy – and our nation – depends on our vote. It’s a lesson this extraordinarily painful year has instilled in all of us. We at the °Ä²Ê¿ª½± will work to protect our democracy and make sure that every vote is counted.â€
