Portrait of William Still (1821-1902). One of many understudied black abolitionists, Still was a Philadelphia antislavery activist who worked with the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery. In his 1872 book, The Underground Railroad, he tells the stories of some of the hundreds of people he helped to escape from
slavery.
